| The Mount Stephen Club is a superb example of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture. This neo-classical movement was popular in Canada in the 1860s and 70s, following the work of the English architect Charles Barry in his Reform and Travellers clubs in London. The style is characterized by profuse ornamentation, which is sumptuously carved to produce a rich effect. The Mount Stephen Club is housed in one of the last Square Mile mansions to be built of Montreal grey limestone. |
