Press release for immediate release - The Mount Stephen Club will close its doors at the end of the year

18 October 2011

As has been the case with other private clubs in Montreal, the Mount Stephen Club finds itself faced with the difficult task of having to announce that the institution, first established 85 years ago, will be closing its doors as of December 23, 2011. The club had been trying for some time to find a path to profitability, however, despite major efforts, including several millions of dollars invested in improvements to its historic Drummond Street building, the situation had become untenable.

“The club has been accumulating deficits for years now, and it is unfortunately no longer possible to continue operating”, explains Mr. Harry J. Plafter, General Manager of the establishment. “Out of respect for our staff and in order to honour our commitments towards members and clients, the club will remain open until the end of the year.” Until then, the Mount Stephen Club will maintain its regular activities and host all scheduled events.

About Mount Stephen Club The Mount Stephen Club was founded in 1926 in order to protect this elegant residence originally built in the 1870’s. Recognized as an historic site, the house is one of the best examples of residential Victorian architecture in North America, and is located in Montreal’s Golden Square Mile.
