The Club then and now
The Mount Stephen Club celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2011. It was in 1926 that Noah Timmins, J.H. Maher and J.S. Dohan decided to found a private club for businessmen to protect the opulent residence built by George Stephen in the heart of the Golden Square Mile district. They called it the Mount Stephen Club in memory of its first owner.
Various transformations were carried out as discreetly as possible to turn the residence into a Club. Only the cellar, the kitchen, the bathrooms and the former winter garden were revamped. In 1927, the glass panes and the beams of the winter garden gave way to limestone walls, which were used to create private rooms for members’ wives, as the Club per se was reserved for men.
In 1964, a new by-law permitted wives to enter by the main door… on Thursdays only! However, it wasn’t until the middle of the 1970’s that they were finally allowed to become fully fledged members of the Club.
Although the neighbourhood has changed greatly, the house itself has lost none of its imposing allure and to this day, it remains one of the centres of attraction in downtown Montreal. The Club and its new owner, the Tidan Hospitality Group are extremely keen to maintain its original atmosphere and appearance. For this reason, they have invested considerable sums of money to maintain an exceptionally comfortable and elegant setting, where business decisions are made and important receptions are held.
Today, through membership in the Club, members participate with its new buyers in the conservation and preservation of this architectural treasure, which is now a historical Canadian heritage site. The public also has the opportunity to discover its historical charm and character when savouring the gourmet dinner on Saturday nights, the sumptuous musical brunch on Sundays (where you can take a guided tour of the house) or when enjoying the street-level terrace during the week on fine summer days. The Club also organizes special events for members and their guests (and occasionally for the public), such as Oyster night, Lobster Night, wine tastings, exhibitions of works of art, Opera Nights and the New Year’s Eve Gala.
Dining rooms and lounges of various sizes enable members of the Club, the greater business community and the public to hold conferences and business meetings there as well as private receptions and cocktail parties. Its quietly elegant and memorable ambiance, as well as its fine cuisine, make the Mount Stephen Club truly prestigious and unique.
